Project Location: James Pass Arboretum, 300 South Avery Avenue, 13204.

Project Scope: The project includes the first phase of improving James Pass Arboretum’s ecological health, visitor experience, and educational opportunities within the arboretum to achieve to achieve Level 1 Arboretum Accreditation through:

1. Tree Management:

  • Remove approximately 70 trees that are diseased, invasive, or at the end of their lifespan (projected removal is winter 2024/25)
  • Initial plantings of new native trees to support local biodiversity (projected fall 2025)

2. Walking Trail Enhancements:

  • Upgrade existing walking trail loop to improve accessibility and safety (projected summer 2025)

3. Aesthetics & Garden Revitalization:

  • Initial refreshing of existing garden areas, incorporating native plants and addition of mulch beds (projected fall 2025)
  • Replace the chain link fence on the western side of the park to match the existing ornamental iron fence (projected summer 2025)

4. Educational Opportunities:

  • Label all trees to showcase the arboretum’s diversity throughout the year (projected fall 2025)
  • Design and install the outdoor "classroom" spaces geared towards environmental and nature education (ongoing)

5. Community Engagement:

  • Attend meetings throughout the year to educate and gather feedback, photos, stories and history on James Pass Arboretum (ongoing)
  • Establish a community coalition to support ongoing maintenance and stewardship. (ongoing)
  • Identify partnerships (ongoing)

Funding Source: Parks Capital Improvement Funds

Project Timeline: The timeline is subject to change due to contractor schedules, material availability and weather.
