Firefighters Quickly Extinguish Fire on N McBride Street

Syracuse, NY- On Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 8:46 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a fire in the house at 615 N McBride St. Our on-duty fire investigator was only a few blocks away and was on scene seconds later. He found a two-story, wood-framed, two-family residence with fire showing out multiple windows on the second floor. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted. As additional crews showed up moments later, they immediately stretched hoses inside the structure and set up to vent the structure vertically.

As teams of firefighters moved hoses inside and upstairs to extinguish the fire, other teams of firefighters prepared to search the entire building. All occupants had escaped before the arrival of the Fire Department. The Squad Company put a ladder to the roof and cut a hole in the roof of the structure. This allows the superheated and toxic gas produced by fire to escape the building. This ventilation can quickly improve conditions inside the structure and decrease the chances of fire spreading in the attic. The fire was extinguished in less than ten minutes. Crews ensured there were no pockets of hidden fire and extinguished the last of the hot spots after an additional thirty minutes. Crews remain on the scene, clearing smoke from the building, cleaning up, and assisting fire investigators.

The building contains two apartments, and the fire occurred on the second floor. That apartment suffered fire, smoke, and water damage, as did other parts of the building. Four occupants were displaced; the Red Cross is assisting them. The origin and cause of the fire are still under investigation. There were no injuries to civilians or to Fire Department personnel.

A total of 39 Fire Department Personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.
