Water Sampling Update

Published on October 31, 2024

Statement by Greg Loh, Chief Policy Officer:

"As part of an ongoing review, the City of Syracuse Department of Water has determined some water samples collected at homes with lead services in the first half of 2024 were administered improperly by department employees. Required sampling protocols were not followed which may explain the elevated levels of lead in those samples. Two Water Department employees have been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.

As previously announced, results from the second half 2024 sampling at 115 properties came in under EPA action levels. In addition, resampling has been completed at 24 of the 27 properties where elevated levels were found during the first half of 2024 sampling. Only two were shown to be above EPA action levels. These findings further indicate that first half 2024 sampling results were outliers.”
