Firefighters Quickly Extinguish Fire in Holland Street House
Published on May 07, 2024
Syracuse, NY- On Friday, May 3, 2024, at 11:48 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a report of a possible housefire at 226 Holland Street. Firefighters from Station 3, on Bellevue Ave., were the first to arrive on the scene moments later. They reported finding a two-and-a-half-story wood frame house that was boarded up. Although there was no obvious indication of a fire when they arrived, crews began to investigate the scene. As additional units arrived, firefighters saw smoke and flames coming from a second-floor window in the rear of the home. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted.
Crews worked to remove boards from windows and doors as hose teams sprayed water in through the window where they could see flames. Other teams of firefighters prepared to search for any trapped occupants. As soon as they had gained access to the structure, crews moved hoses inside and found fire in a room on the second floor. The flames were quickly extinguished, and the fire was prevented from spreading any further. Teams of firefighters searching the home were able to confirm that there was no one inside. The fire was declared out after approximately 10 minutes. Firefighters remained on the scene for over an hour, ensuring there was no fire spread and clearing smoke from the building.
The home suffered fire, smoke, and water damage to the second floor. Syracuse Fire investigators were at the scene working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. That investigation is ongoing. The home was known to be vacant at the time the fire occurred. There were no injuries reported to civilians or to Fire Department personnel.
A total of 38 Fire Department personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, and National Grid also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, and National Grid.
