One Person Sent to Hospital Following Afternoon Fire
Published on November 23, 2023
Syracuse, NY-
On Thursday, November 23, 2023 at 2:17 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported fire at 132 Crestview Drive, in Syracuse’s Valley Neighborhood. Firefighters from Station 18, on Midland Ave, arrived on the scene moments later to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the attached garage of a single-story home. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted, indicating a working fire.
The first arriving crews connected supply lines to a nearby fire hydrant and began to stretch hoses into the structure to battle the blaze. Additional arriving teams of firefighters stretched additional hoses into the structure, while other teams of firefighters performed methodical searches of the home to check for trapped occupants. Searches were negative; all of the occupants were able to escape prior to the Fire Department’s arrival. The fire was brought under control after approximately 20 minutes and firefighters transitioned to an overhaul operation, searching for any hidden fire spread. The fire was declared out after approximately 40 minutes.
Three people were living in the home at the time of the fire. All were able to escape on their own, however two of the occupants were treated by ambulance crews at the scene for burns and smoke inhalation. One of the occupants was later transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Their injuries are not considered life threatening. There were no injuries reported to fire department personnel.
The home suffered extensive fire, smoke, and water damage to the garage and parts of the first floor. The rest of the first floor also sustained smoke damage. The Red Cross was on scene assisting the displaced occupants. Syracuse Fire Investigators working at the scene determined that the fire began in the garage and was caused by unattended cooking.
A total of 38 Fire Department personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.
