Fire Damages Mary Street Home
Published on November 15, 2023
Syracuse, NY-
On Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at 1:07 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported structure fire in the 100 block of Mary Street, on the City’s North Side. Firefighters from station 2, on Lodi Street, arrived on the scene at 118 Mary Street less than 2 minutes later. When they arrived, firefighters found a two-story home with flames blowing out of first floor windows, engulfing the front porch. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted, indicating a working fire.
The first arriving crews began to stretch hoses to the building as additional resources arrived on the scene. Firefighters knocked down the fire on the porch and dragged hoses in through the front door, where they were met with heavy fire conditions, high heat, and blinding smoke. Additional teams of firefighters began a systematic search of the structure, looking for any trapped occupants. No one was home at the time of the fire; all searches were negative. Crews moved hoses through the first floor of the building, extinguishing the bulk of the fire as they went. Most of the fire was out approximately 20 minutes after crews arrived. Firefighters transitioned to an overhaul operation, a process that involves opening holes in walls and ceilings to check for fire spread. The fire was declared out after approximately 40 minutes.
Syracuse Fire Investigators were on the scene working to determine the Origin and cause of the fire. The first floor of the home suffered extensive fire, smoke, and water damage. The second floor also suffered smoke damage. The home was unoccupied at the time the fire occurred. There were no injuries reported to civilians or to fire department personnel.
A total of 43 Fire Department personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.
