One Displaced Following Mid-Day Fire on Sherbourne Road

Syracuse, NY- On Monday, November 13, 2023, at 1:26 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a possible structure fire at the corner of Sherbourne Road and Meadowbrook Drive on the City’s East Side. Firefighters from Station 10, on East Genesee Street, arrived on the scene at 100 Sherbourne Road moments later to find fire blowing out of windows on the first floor near the front of the two-story house. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted, indicating a working fire.

 

The initial arriving crews used hoses to douse the flames from outside, while other firefighters forced open a locked door and donned breathing apparatus to enter the home. Once inside, hose teams and search teams were met with blinding smoke and heavy fire conditions. Initial reports indicated there may still be someone inside, however searches for trapped occupants were negative. Firefighters worked to contain the fire to the first floor, putting out flames there, and moving hoses to the second floor to cut off the fire’s spread. Firefighters also located fire in the basement of the home, and hoses were moved into place to extinguish it. A team of firefighters cut a hole in the roof to release trapped smoke and other products of combustion.

 

The fire was declared out after 40 minutes. The home suffered extensive fire, smoke, and water damage on the first and second floors, as well as the basement. One occupant was displaced by this fire. They were being assisted by the Red Cross. There were no injuries reported to civilians or to Fire Department personnel. Syracuse Fire Investigators were on the scene working to determine the origin and cause of the fire; both are still under investigation.

 

A total of 40 Fire Department personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
