Overnight House Fire Displaces Four

Published on August 06, 2023

Syracuse, NY- On August 6, 2023, at 3:02 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported structure fire at 209 Mildred Ave. Firefighters from Station 9 on Shuart Ave. arrived on the scene moments later to find a two-and-a-half-story home with smoke and flames showing on the side of the building. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted, and firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack to extinguish the fire.

As additional resources arrived on the scene, crews began stretching hoses into the building, and started systematic searches to find any trapped victims. All searches were negative. Smoke detectors had alerted the occupants of the home to the danger, and they were all able to escape prior to the Fire Department’s arrival. Properly installed, working smoke detectors are the most important aspect of any home fire safety plan.

Firefighters located the fire on the second floor of the home and moved hoses into position to extinguish that fire. It was soon discovered that the fire had spread to the attic, so crews used tools to make holes in the ceiling of the second floor and flowed water into the attic extinguishing the flames there. The fire was brought under control and declared out after approximately 30 minutes.

Syracuse Fire investigators were on the scene working to determine the cause of the fire, which started on the second floor. The second floor and attic of the structure sustained fire, smoke, and water damage. The first floor of the home also sustained smoke and water damage. A total of four residents were displaced by this fire; they were being assisted by the Red Cross. There were no injuries reported to civilians or to firefighters.

A total of 36 fire personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid and The Red Cross. This was the 55th major fire in the City of Syracuse this year.
