Firefighters Battle Third Major Blaze in Eight Hours
Published on July 24, 2023
Syracuse, NY-
On July 24, 2023, at 1:21 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a possible fire at 1412 South McBride Street. Firefighters from Station 1, on South State Street arrived on the scene in just over two minutes and forty seconds to find a two-and-a-half story single family home, with smoke coming from several windows on the first floor. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted.
Firefighters stretched hoses into the structure, and other teams began searches for any trapped occupants. Crews were able to locate the fire in the kitchen of the first floor. Firefighters extinguished the main body of the fire and began to check for fire spread to other parts of the home. Searches for trapped occupants were negative. Sadly, a family dog perished in the smoke.
Syracuse Fire Investigators determined that the fire began in the kitchen of the home and was caused by unattended cooking on the stove. The kitchen suffered moderate to heavy fire, smoke, and water damage. The rest of the first floor and second floor also sustained smoke damage.
This fire was declared out after approximately 22 minutes. Fire crews remained on the scene and utilized fans to remove smoke and other products of combustion from the building. A total of five occupants were displaced. They were being assisted by the American Red Cross. No Injuries were reported to civilians or to fire department personnel.
A total of 42 Fire Department personnel responded to this fire, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross. This was the third major structure fire that Syracuse Firefighters have responded to today, and the 52
nd
this year in the City of Syracuse.
