Fire on Otisco Street Displaces Six
Published on July 16, 2023
Syracuse, NY-
On July 16, 2023, at 2:03 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a possible fire at 310 Otisco Street, on the Near West Side. Firefighters from Station 6 on West Street arrived on the scene two minutes and thirty seconds later to find a two-story single-family home with black smoke coming from the second-floor windows on the front of the building. The buildings occupants were evacuating. Firefighters made entry and encountered heavy smoke and zero visibility. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted.
Crews began to stretch hoses into the structure and up to the second floor, while other firefighters working in teams began a methodical search of the first and second floors of the structure, checking for trapped occupants. The fire was determined to be on the second floor, and companies quickly located the source and extinguished the flames. Searches were negative, all occupants were able to safely escape prior to the fire department’s arrival. The fire was confined to the second floor and did not spread to other parts of the building.
The fire was declared out after approximately 20 minutes. Crews remained on the scene utilizing fans to clear the building of smoke and other products of combustion. The second floor of the home sustained fire, smoke, and water damage. The first floor sustained water damage as well. Six people lived at the home at the time of the fire and were displaced due to the damage. They were being assisted by the American Red Cross. Syracuse Fire Investigators were on the scene working to determine the cause of the fire. There were no injuries reported to civilians or to Firefighters.
A total of 37 fire department personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.
