Fire Damages Ash Street Apartment

Syracuse, NY- On July 13, 2023, at 8:27 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a possible fire at 508 Ash Street on the City’s North Side. Firefighters from Station 2 on Lodi St. arrived on the scene in just over two minutes and thirty seconds to find a two-and-a-half-story multi-family home with smoke showing from the rear of the building and roof. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted.

 

Firefighters from the first arriving companies began stretching hoses into the building to extinguish the fire, while others began searches of the second floor, where the fire was located, to look for trapped occupants. All occupants were able to escape safely before the Fire Department’s arrival. Additional arriving fire companies stretched hoses into the building and cut a hole in the roof to ventilate smoke and heat from the fire. The fire was located in the rear apartment on the second floor. It took firefighters a little more than 10 minutes to bring the fire under control; the fire was declared completely out after 20 minutes. Firefighters remained on the scene and utilized fans to clear the remaining smoke and products of combustion from the building.

 

The building contained three apartments, two on the second floor and one on the first. The fire was confined to the second-floor rear apartment, which sustained heavy fire, smoke, and water damage. The first floor also sustained water damage. Syracuse Fire Investigators were on the scene working to determine the cause of the fire. The fire displaced a total of four occupants. The Red Cross was assisting them. There were no injuries reported to civilians or to firefighters.

 

A total of 40 fire personnel, including command and support staff, responded to this incident. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
