Firefighters Stop Kitchen Fire in Apartment

Published on July 11, 2023

Syracuse, NY- On July 11, 2023, at 4:47 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a possible fire at 122 Tyler Court, in downtown Syracuse. There were multiple callers reporting smoke coming from the windows of an apartment at that address. Firefighters from Station 1, on South State Street, arrived on the scene in under two minutes and thirty seconds. As they arrived, they reported thick dark smoke coming from a window on the second floor of a three-story brick apartment building. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted due to the smoke, and the high hazard associated with high occupancy apartment buildings like this one.

Crews stretched hoses into the building and up the stairs to the second floor. Other crews began to search the building for trapped occupants and assist other occupants who were evacuating due to the smoke. After forcing open a locked apartment door, teams located the fire in the kitchen of an apartment and were able to quickly put it out. All searches were negative; the lone occupant of the apartment was not home at the time of the fire. Large fans were set up to clear the building of smoke, and firefighters took care to ensure as little damage was done as possible while checking that the fire had not spread.

The fire was contained to the kitchen of the apartment of origin. Damage was minor to moderate, and the occupant was able to return home once fire operations had been completed. The fire was declared out after approximately 10 minutes. Syracuse Fire Investigators were on the scene working to determine the cause of the fire. No injuries were reported to civilians or to fire department personnel.
