Syracuse, NY- On June 27, 2023, at 4:15 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters responded to investigate a reported fire alarm activation at 107 Smith Lane, The Vincent Apartments. While fire units were en route, the Onondaga County 911 Center advised that they had reports of a smoke odor in the structure along with the alarm activation. The alarm was upgraded to a full structure fire response. Firefighters from Station 8, on South Salina Street, arrived on the scene moments later to find a three-story apartment building with light smoke coming from windows on the second floor in the front and rear of the structure. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted due to the occupancy of the building. Firefighters from Engine 8 and Truck 8 immediately went to work moving hoses into the building to fight the fire and searching for any trapped occupants.
The fire was burning in a second-floor apartment. Additional fire companies arrived on the scene to assist with the operation and firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, preventing it from spreading outside the apartment of origin. Searches were negative for trapped occupants. Crews then immediately began ventilation efforts to clear the building of smoke and toxic products of combustion.
The fire was declared out after approximately 20 minutes. Syracuse Fire Investigators were on the scene working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. The apartment where the fire occurred was vacant, and sustained moderate fire, smoke, and water damage. No occupants of other apartments in the building were displaced. There were no injuries reported to civilians or to firefighters.
A total of 38 personnel, including command and support staff responded to this incident. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
