Vacant Butternut Street Home Heavily Damaged by Fire

SYRACUSE, N.Y. –    On May 13, 2023, at 9:33 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported fire in the 1400 block of Butternut Street. Firefighters from Station 2 (Lodi St.) arrived on the scene at 1405 Butternut Street moments later, to find a wall of flame engulfing the first and second floor porch of the two-story home and spreading inside. A signal 99 was transmitted as additional fire companies were arriving on scene.

 

Firefighters extinguished the fire on the outside of the home and began to move hoselines inside to cut off the fire’s extension. Flames were showing through the flat roof of the structure, indicating that there was potentially fire in the cockloft. Teams of firefighters worked to expose the area above the second floor and were able to stop the flames spreading. The fire took more than 40 minutes to bring under control, and crews spent several hours on scene overhauling and checking for hotspots.

 

Syracuse Fire Investigators were on scene working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. The vacant home sustained significant smoke, fire, and water damage. There were no injuries reported to firefighters or civilians.

 

A total of 36 Fire personnel, from 6 different city fire stations, responded to this fire, including command and support personnel. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross responded to the scene as well.
