Syracuse Firefighters Extinguish Northside Fire
Published on March 16, 2023
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – On March 16, 2023 at 4:51 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 center to a reported fire at 716 East Laurel Street, on the City’s North Side. Firefighters from Station 2 (Lodi St.) arrived on the scene in less than three minutes, to find a two-story home with heavy fire and smoke showing.
The
first arriving companies transmitted a Signal 99, the signal for a working fire, and began to stretch hoses into the structure, and start searches for any potential victims. Firefighters made a valiant push to extinguish the fire from the inside, but conditions in the building quickly became untenable. The decision was made to move to a defensive operation. Firefighters used multiple hoses to spray water and knock the fire down from outside the structure. After the bulk of the fire was knocked down, firefighters returned to an interior attack. Additional units were requested to the scene to assist in the firefight. The fire was eventually brought under control, and after approximately 60 minutes, was declared out.
Firefighters remained on scene for an additional two hours ensuring there were no hotspots and clearing smoke and toxic gases from the building. There were a total of three apartments in the building, two of which were occupied at the time of the fire. The American Red Cross was on scene assisting the occupants of the two apartments, as they will not be able to return to their homes tonight due to fire, smoke, and water damage.
Syracuse Fire investigators were on the scene working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, and National Grid were also on the scene assisting. There were no civilian injuries reported. One firefighter suffered a minor injury during the later stages of the operation but was able to continue working. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, Syracuse Police, National Grid, AMR, and the Red Cross.
