Syracuse Firefighters Contain Apartment Building Fire to One Apartment
Published on March 05, 2023
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – On March 5, 2023, at 3:31 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted to a possible apartment fire at 126 Jamesville Ave, on the City’s South Side. Firefighters from Station 8 (S. Salina St.) arrived on the scene with minutes to find light smoke coming from a second-floor window of a two-story apartment building. Firefighters stretched hoses into the building and began to investigate the source of the smoke.
The kitchen of a second-floor apartment was found to be on fire, and firefighters went to work.
Using hose streams to fight the flames, Firefighters were able to contain the damage to the apartment of origin. A hole was cut in the roof to release smoke and hot gases that were building up, as well as to check for extension in the attic spaces. In garden-style apartments such as the one where the fire occurred, unprotected attic spaces are an easy way for fire to spread.
The fire was declared under control after about 30 minutes. Crews remained on the scene for approximately two hours, ensuring that the fire apartment, and the rest of the building, were clear of toxic smoke and fumes. Residents from unaffected apartments were allowed back to their homes once firefighters confirmed that it was safe.
A total of 38 Firefighters responded to this fire, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Investigators were on the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire. At least one occupant was displaced, they were being helped by the Red Cross. Additional agencies that responded include, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross. We thank our partners at Onondaga County 911, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.
