Syracuse Firefighters Extinguish Strathmore House Fire
Published on February 08, 2023
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – On February 8, 2023, at 8:51 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by Onondaga County 911 to a possible fire at 120 Clairmonte Ave., in the City’s Strathmore neighborhood. Firefighters from Engine Company 3 (Bellevue Ave) arrived on the scene in under 2 minutes to find smoke and flames showing from the side of the large home. Crews stretched hoses into the home and worked to extinguish the fire. Two occupants at home when the fire broke out were able to make it out on their own, prior to arrival of the fire department. Sadly, a pet cat succumbed to the smoke.
The home was equipped with working smoke detectors, which alerted the occupants to the fire, allowing them to escape. Properly installed, working smoke detectors are a vital part of an effective home safety plan.
Firefighters were able to bring the bulk of the fire under control in approximately 30 minutes. Crews will remain on the scene into the night, systematically checking for fire extension, and clearing smoke and toxic gases from the home. This is the sixth ‘Signal 99’- a term used by Firefighters to indicate a major working fire- that the Syracuse Fire Department has faced in 2023.
There are no reports of injuries to civilians or firefighters at this time. Fire department investigators are on the scene working to determine the cause of the fire, which began in the basement and extended into the first and second floor of the home.
More than 30 firefighters responded to the scene of the fire. Syracuse Police, National Grid, American Medical Response, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 center, SPD, National Grid, AMR and the Red Cross.
