Syracuse City Parks Welcomes Syracuse Pond Hockey Classic

On a frigid January Saturday, the Syracuse Pond Hockey Classic returned to scenic Hiawatha Lake at Upper Onondaga Park. Sixteen teams of skilled hockey players squared off in the one-day outdoor hockey tournament in Syracuse’s Strathmore neighborhood.

Competitive three-on-three games were played on 100X40 foot rinks on the frozen lake surrounded by historic homes. The tournament was created by a group of Syracuse natives, including Mayor Walsh, who ice skated at the park growing up.

“Hiawatha Lake is an incredible resource in the heart of Syracuse. It is a thrill to be able to share what we enjoyed as kids with people from across the city and the region,” said Mayor Walsh.

McKie Sports won the tournament for the second time in a row. The Classic raised money for Luke’s Syracuse Army, a fund raising campaign to support advances in pediatric cancer. Learn more about the event at syracusepondhockeyclassic.com.

Hiawatha Lake had six rinks each 100 feet X 40 feet with special pond hockey goals.

The Syracuse Pond Hockey Classic is played on Hiawatha Lake at Upper Onondaga Park.

Mayor Walsh is a member of the tournament organizing committee and helped care for the ice at the event.

Each team had a minimum of three games.

McKie Sports won the Syracuse Pond Hockey Classic Cup for the second time in a row.
