DPW and Department of Engineering will reconstruct nearly 23 miles of city streets

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced this year’s road reconstruction with an in-depth look at projects for the 2023 reconstruction season. The road reconstruction projects will be completed by the City’s Department of Public Works (DPW), Department of Engineering, and various contractors, using local, state and federal funds.
The plan includes reconstruction of nearly 23 miles of roads with projects in every quadrant of the city. The Syracuse Common Council approved the plan at its April 24 regular meeting. The City also plans to seal and resurface an additional 40 miles of streets in areas without curbing.
“I am pleased to share our plans for road reconstruction with the community and I thank the Common Council for approving the funding for this season,” said Mayor Walsh. “The weather is warming up and so are our reconstruction efforts. By keeping residents and local businesses up to date on projects, I’m confident we can all work together to safely navigate another season of reconstruction.”
Using a variety of metrics including Cityline data, field observations, spatial data, and technology to assess road conditions, the City is able to identify what roads need to be repaired most each year. The Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council rates the city’s roads each year, with a rating of 10 being excellent condition and a rating 1 being very poor condition. DPW will address a majority of streets that have poor ratings as part of the 2023 reconstruction season.
A map of streets to be reconstructed is at syr.gov/recon.
“Partnering with SMTC to rate our roads has given us a clearer picture of road conditions around town,” said Chief Operating Officer Corey Driscoll Dunham. “This allows us to asses where the need is most and address road reconstruction in an efficient and equitable way.”
The City’s Engineering Department is planning work on 2.8 miles of road with two major Dig-Once projects:
- W Genesee St from N Salina St to Myrtle St
- E Colvin St from S Salina St to Jamesville Ave
Dig Once projects signify an enhanced level of coordination with utility providers (water, sewer, telecommunication, gas, etc.) with the goal of replacing and repairing as much underground infrastructure as possible to minimize any future excavations made in newly paved roads.
Other City road reconstruction projects include:
- S Clinton St from W Jefferson St to W Taylor St will be milled and paved and converted to two-way by DPW
