What is Syracuse Build?

In 2020, Mayor Ben Walsh launched Syracuse Build to create an inclusive and skilled infrastructure workforce. Syracuse Build provides an accessible workforce pipeline for Syracuse residents, especially for women and people of color. Syracuse Build convenes local government, anchor institutions, union apprenticeship programs, and construction firms into a coordinated network of community, training, and workforce partners. The program allows residents to gain access to pre-apprenticeship programs and credentials for careers in building and construction.

Mission

Syracuse Build connects capable job seekers from historically marginalized communities in Syracuse to career pathways in construction-related fields.

Strategy

The program is a pipeline for locally hired construction workers and unions for I-81, while developing an inclusive workplace:

  • Increasing the number of union apprenticeships
  • Increasing diversity and residents in apprenticeships.

Pathways to Apprenticeship

Pathways to Apprenticeship program is a joint effort between the Central and Northern New York Building Trades Council and Syracuse Build. It gives the participants the skills they need to enter extremely competitive union-sponsored registered apprenticeships. It provides networking opportunities with local trade unions and guidance through the registered apprenticeship application process.

The Pathways to Apprenticeship program runs in cohorts. To check for the next available cohort and openings, visit: Openings at Syracuse Build at CNY Works Inc. (breezy.hr).

Other Syracuse Build Programs

Build Ready is a Construction Training program that prepares participants for various construction or apprenticeship programs. The training includes construction math, blue print reading, and introduction to power tools and hand tools.

HVAC/R Training through OCM BOCES is a 715 hour long hands-on and technical training program covering all aspects of the Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning/Refrigeration field.

Syracuse has been nationally recognized for Syracuse Build. It is one of six programs included in theFederal Highway Administration’s Strategic Workforce Development Every Day Counts-6 program. This program provides resources and strategies to identify, train, and place people in the workforce. This will fill construction jobs to support the development of the Nation’s highway system.
