Reducing the number of lead-based paint hazards in homes is a priority of the City of Syracuse. When residents are exposed to these hazards, their health is put at risk. The Lead Hazard Control Office (LHCO) works on behalf of tenants and homeowners to proactively identify lead-based paint hazards. The office ensures hazards are measured and removed to restore safe, healthy housing conditions across the city of Syracuse for current and future generations.

Services

  1. Work with community partners, owners, and tenants to reduce the potential presence of lead-based paint hazards within their homes. 

  2. Require inspections for potential lead-based paint hazards as part of the City’s current inspection processes associated with Rental Registries, Certificates of Compliance, and general complaints.

  3. Require property owners in violation to correct areas of lead-based paint hazards using lead-safe work practices. Properties must pass a final inspection.

  4. Educate residents on the guidelines set by the Lead Abatement and Control Ordinance, also called the “Lead Ordinance”. Click Here for the Lead Ordinance.

  5. Refer individuals to the appropriate resources for their lead-related concerns.
