Syracuse Open Data Day 2024

Come join the City of Syracuse for our 2nd Open Data Day where you learn about what information the City of Syracuse puts on the Open Data Portal, participate in breakout sessions to learn industry standard tools to access and visualize open data, and create your own project to compete against others.

Sign up at the link on the right. It's free, it's fun, and you will have food! The event is on Saturday November 2nd from 10:00am - 4:30pm, and attendees are free to any or all of the sessions.

The contest will be a month-long data challenge, where the featured focus area will be in the area of Healthy Housing: Quality, Safety, & Accessibility. The project pitches and judging will happen in the afternoon of November 2nd.

Prizes

For the data project contest, the prizes for the winning teams will be the following amounts:

1st Place - $1,000

2nd Place - $500

3rd Place - $300

Wipro Sponsored Prize - $500 

Wipro is awarding a branded prize at this year’s Civic Data challenge.  Their prize is pertaining to sustainable and net zero housing.  Net zero means that a building releases no net carbon.  Sustainable housing solutions can involve property owners building/updating homes in ways that use water, energy, and building materials more efficiently, which can reduce greenhouse gases and decrease utility bills.

Who can participate

Anyone with an interest in open data for the public good can take part of the Civic Data Challenge. Since the event is in person, the teams have to have at least one person present in person at the Open Data Day event.

Data Challenge Focus Area

The theme for this years event is Healthy Housing: Quality, Safety, & Accessibility.  These data projects have to use at least one dataset from Open Data Syracuse, but are welcome to use additional data sources.  Some relevant information and sources that teams can use are listed below.

Judging Criteria

  • Creativity - How are you bringing a unique idea into this challenge
  • Wow factor - Is this a creative project and idea
  • Execution - How well executed is this project, realizing it is only over a month.
  • Information value - How informative is the project
  • Multidisciplinary project - We encourage interdisciplinary created by teams with diverse backgrounds

Projects need to be submitted to the Open Data Day Devpost page by 1:45 PM on Saturday Nov. 2nd, 2024.
