Overview

The Syracuse Public Art Commission (SPAC) is an 11-member, all-volunteer commission that is appointed by the mayor and Common Council.  The primary role of SPAC is to review and approve Public Art applications. Any individuals or groups interested in installing public art on public property or a mural on private property are required to complete and submit an application to SPAC for review. SPAC also advises the City on additions to and maintenance of the City's public art collection.

Working closely with SPAC is the City's Public Art Coordinator. The coordinator is responsible for helping applicants prepare public art applications for SPAC review.

Creative Opportunities:

City As Canvas: TNT's City as Canvas initiative is the first community based city-wide public art mural program of its kind within the City of Syracuse.   This initiative is driven by the community throughout the entire process; from submitting ideas for mural locations within each neighborhood, to voting on the locations, to determining the final civic pride themed design submitted by local artists through a ranked-choice ballot process.  For more information and opportunities to apply, please visit the City As Canvas website.

CNY Arts: CNY Arts is our regional arts council, whose mission is to promote, support, and celebrate arts and culture in Central New York.  CNY Arts runs several grant programs available for individual artists including the Statewide Community Regrant program of the NYS Council on the Arts and the City of Syracuse's Arts and Culture Recovery Fund.  Please visit CNY Arts for more information and grant opportunities.

Public Art Artist Registry

Public Art Artist Registry

The Syracuse Public Art Commission (SPAC) is developing a public database of regional visual artists representing a wide variety of media and approaches. The registry is a great way to expose your craft to potential funders and the growing audience of public art enthusiasts. You can also opt in to receive news from SPAC about upcoming public art opportunities.

The registry is free to join and available to all public artists of all experience levels. Please complete and submit the registry form (below). In addition to basic contact information, you will be asked several questions about your artwork, experience and interests. You will also be able to upload images and/or provide links to your portfolio. Technical assistance is available to help you complete the registry.

For more information, contact Kate Auwaerter, Public Art Coordinator, at 315-448-8108 or Kauwaerter@syrgov.net
