Starting Monday, September 11 , West Genesee Street between North Clinton and West Street will experience delays as crews will be milling and paving. The road will be open during construction and be completed in about one week. Actual project timeframes are contingent on favorable weather.
Dig Once projects signify an enhanced level of coordination with utility providers (water, sewer, telecommunication, gas, etc.) with the goal of replacing and repairing as much underground infrastructure as possible to minimize any future excavations made in newly paved roads.
Work will include full depth reconstruction of the road including new pavement, new sidewalks, curb installations, traffic and pedestrian signal upgrades, replacement of water mains and lead water services, rehabilitation of sewer infrastructure, and landscaping improvements.
Site History & Existing Conditions:
The existing pavement along W. Genesee St. has begun to develop distresses/cracking as a result of normal wear and tear over time, water main breaks, and sewer main collapses. Winter maintenance and snow removal activities further accelerate the deterioration of the roadway pavement areas. Areas of the pedestrian infrastructure (e.g. sidewalks and intersection curb ramps) are lacking ADA-compliant features such as cast-iron detectable warning units or are too narrow or damaged. The underlying water infrastructure was installed between 1890 to the 1930’s with little to upgrades since then. Over the years, numerous water main breaks have occurred along the W Genesee Corridor, causing damage to the roadway and weakening the water infrastructure. Existing lead water services have also been identified on this corridor.

This Dig Once project along W. Genesee St. will improve the mobility and safety of vehicular traffic, bicyclists and pedestrians. The project will provide continuous usable sidewalks, increase pedestrian safety, and reduce traffic speeds. The corridor will be enhanced by tree plantings and paver installations. Unneeded utility poles will be removed that are obstructing the sidewalk. Drainage will also be improved with several new structures and cleaning of existing drainage structures. Water main upgrades along this corridor will remove of lead water services and provide better fire protection and a more reliable water distribution system for the City and its residents.
