Fire Damages Vacant West Pleasant Avenue Home Overnight
Published on August 31, 2023
Syracuse, NY-
On August 31, 2023, at 2:42 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported structure fire at 226 West Pleasant Avenue, on Syracuse’s South Side. Syracuse Police Officers patrolling the area came upon the house in flames and notified the 911 Center. Firefighters from Station 8 on South Salina Street arrived on the scene just over two minutes later to find a two-and-a-half-story home with fire showing from the side of the house. A ‘signal 99’ was transmitted and crews went to work.
Teams of firefighters stretched hoses into the building to battle the flames, while other teams searched for trapped occupants. The house was determined to be vacant. All searches were negative. Firefighters located fire on the first floor of the home and extinguished it there. Other hoses were stretched to the second floor and attic to cut off the fire’s vertical spread. The fire was declared out after approximately 30 minutes.
Firefighters remained on the scene for a time after the fire was extinguished, checking for hotspots and clearing smoke and fumes from the building. Syracuse Fire Investigators were on the scene working to determine the cause of the fire. The vacant home sustained significant fire, smoke, and water damage. There were no reports of injuries to civilians or to fire personnel.
A total of 37 fire personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, and National Grid also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at SPD, AMR, and National Grid.
